We are excited to announce that the 2018 Mutual Concerns of Air and Space Museums Conference will take place November 2 - 6, 2018 in coordination with Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

The conference schedule can be found here.

For 30 years now, the Mutual Concerns of Aviation and Space Museums Conference has provided an active professional environment for conversations and collaborative actions amongst professionals in our unique museum settings. On a biennial basis, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum co-hosts this conference, assembling aviation and space museums to discuss our “mutual concerns” at locations in the field. Mutual Concerns is an event where professionals gather ideas, experiences, and perspectives from representatives of over one hundred museums, at times ranging from Poland to Australia. Our assembly allows participants to communicate and share best practices, innovative educational program design, and strategies for keeping our museums thriving through a difficult economic atmosphere, among other professional issues. This unique assembly of scholars, technicians, educators, administrators, conservators, and other museum employees provides a space where colleagues engage in dynamic forms of learning beyond the walls of their own institution.

We share common stories, common interests, and most of all, a common cause to see that our museums do their best to serve our audiences by conveying engaging stories about the people, artifacts, and technology related to air and space history.

Previous Mutual Concerns conferences have featured keynote speakers including former astronaut Dr. Michael Massimino and first female Thunderbird pilot Nicole Malachowski, enriching excursions to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in 2016, and pressing topics of the time, such as establishing thriving membership programs, managing issues of radiation, and recovering from disasters. Looking back at the history of our conference and the network created by meeting, we can trace its tangible impact in the field.
